Niki de Saint Phalle

The Artwork of Niki de Saint Phalle

Niki de Saint Phalle was a French American artist born in 1930, known for her for sculpture, painting and filmmaking. She was married to Jean Tinguely who was known for his kinetic art. Despite having no formal training in art, she knew how to express her anger and naïvity via her beautiful creativity.

During her life, she received two awards: Prix Caran d’Arche in 1994 and the Praemium Imperiale in 2000.

Niki de Saint Phalle’s art represented feminism. She started by sculpting how women were seen in society: mothers, brides, housekeepers… but then she changed her approach to her art. She wanted to create sculptures that challenged the stereotypes of women in the 1960’s and 1970’s, denouncing society’s view on the traditional roles of women.

Over the years, she developed a more optimistic view of women in society, adding more and more colors and bigger forms to her art. Her best known exposition is Nanas (1964-1973) and Tarot Garden (1974-1998).

Her art can now be found on display all over the world.
