Tucked away in the Alpes-Maritime, just 13 km North West of Cannes and South of the City of Grasse, a popular area for people interested in buying Cote d’Azur property, is the medieval village of “Auribeau Sur Siagne” (pronounced Oribow sewa ci-an).
Auribeau was established in the 1400s by the same people who were to become its first inhabitants, high on a hill about 130m above sea level by the river Siagne and easily defended one would surmise, but little were they to know as was anybody else, that the plague would wipe out most of their numbers and the village was to be abandoned by its survivors later that century.
Now rebuilt around a pretty 18th century church the village has a wealth of winding old roads that just beg a visitor to explore, (some of which are only suitable for pedestrians of course).
But just where the claimed population of over 2,500 live is anybody’s guess as in the midst of summer the village is quiet and, fanned by breezes from the mountains – delightfully cool. For people interested in buying a Cote d’Azur property in a quaint and typically French village surrounded by stunning scenery this could be the perfect place to invest.
You can sit and enjoy a glass of wine in the Nu Portail café, which (as the name suggests) lies at the gate of the original village and look at the view of the Tanneron mountains and surrounding hills to the South West.
Tourist maps that are available in the “Nu Portail” that nestle under the shadow of the Mayors offices and church show a map for walkers to explore, but beware some of the hills are quite steep and a trek down to the river is easier to descend than climb back!
