In February, like the rest of the South of France, Nice enjoys Mediterranean sunshine. For those lucky enough to be jetting off to the South of France and escaping the bitter English weather, Bruce International highly recommends stopping by the Nice Carnival.
Spanning from the 13th to 28th February, the Nice Carnival has been the main winter event of the French Riviera since 1294. Each day and night, the streets are overrun with colourful parades, harmonious music and a magical atmosphere!
Le Carnival Parade
During the Carnival, Nice is buzzing with open air music performances, parades and processions. 18 spectacularly decorated floats pass through the town ending in the Place Massena for a mind-blowing finale.
This year’s carnival theme is the King of Media which the floats and 30 traditional papier mache figurines will all be designed around. Over 1000 musicians, performers and dances from all over the world contribute to the splendour of the Nice Carnival making it one of the biggest in the world.
Those who wander away from the main carnival path will be greeted by street theatre and music groups from around the world.
Along the seafront, on the Promenade des Anglais hosts the carnival’s unique flower battles. 16 floats decorated with stunning floral arrangements and wacky characters throw floral artillery into the public. The parade flows along the promenade and ends on Quai des Etats-Unis throwing up to 10,000 flowers along the way.
Made using 80% flower from the Cote D’Azur, the event promotes the Riviera’s famed floral exports including galdoili, tokoyos, mimosas, gerberas, daisies, roses and carnations.
Parade of Lights
The Place Massena a venue synonymous with the Nice Carnival is home to the Parade of Lights.
As well as being the starting point for the carnival’s loop around the Alber 1er Gardens, the square is home to visual entertainment broadcast on giant television screens. After sunset, the carnival floats and figurines are illuminated and can be seen dancing across the screens at the Place Massena.
If you’re in the South of France this February, the Nice Carnival will be a great addition to your itinerary. This fairytale event is sure to transport you from the dull winter blues into a magical dancing kingdom.
