Despite the sophisticated, glamorous, luxurious attraction of the Cote D’Azur, it is also a perfect destination for a family holiday. The gorgeous sun and year-round blue skies create the perfect setting for many outdoor activities for you to enjoy with the children. Here are our favourite family activities on the French Riviera.
La Croisette, Cannes
The Promenade de la Croisette sits at the very heart of Cannes. With its glorious sun, sea breeze and palm trees, it’s perfect for families looking for a balance of playing in the sun and relaxing in the shade. Children have their choice of two play areas, one at each end of la Croisette. The smaller playground is accompanied by a mini-carnival with rides, games and a colourful carousel.
Older children may enjoy the walk along the sunny promenade and posing for pictures on the red carpet, while little ones will love the petit train – little tourist train that leaves from Jardins de la Croisette. Other petit trains run though Nice, Menton and Antibes.
The Mediterranean islands off the coast of Cannes are known as îles de Lérins, with the two largest islands being Sainte-Marguerite and Sainte-Honorat. Both are just a 10 minute ferry-ride from Cannes; Sainte-Marguerite is closer to Cannes and the perfect place for a picnic – even during the summer months, you may well be lucky enough to find a little cove all to yourselves. Children of all ages can enjoy crabbing and splashing in shallow rock pools.
Sainte-Honorat is great for adventures! Explore the Lerins Abbey, which dates all the way back to the 5th Century, chase the winding trails or play hide and seek in the old fort.
During the summer, boats depart from Cannes every hour.
Chateau de Nice
The French Riviera offers more child-friendly history in the shape of Chateau de Nice. You can find the medieval castle between the Old Town and the Port and it is sure to capture the imagination of the whole family. Children can dress up in medieval costumes or try out armour for size. Families with older children can hike all the way to the top of the steps, but there is an elevator if you have a pushchair with you – or think that little legs will get tired! After you’ve looked around, there is a restaurant and playground to enjoy in the sunshine.
Antibes is a great place to stay if you are travelling with a young family. As well as being smaller and very family friendly, Antibes is home to the largest amusement park on the Côte d’Azur, located on the seafront, Antibes Land is easy to get to from Cannes, Nice and Monaco and is for just as much fun for adults as it is for children!
